Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum firmly responded to comments made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who suggested the existence of political violence following the assassination of Ximena Guzmán and José Muñoz, close collaborators of Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada.

Sheinbaum urged against speculation and called for waiting on the results of official investigations, emphasizing the importance of sovereignty and institutional responsibility during a moment of deep national sorrow.

On Tuesday, May 20, the news of the assassination of Ximena Guzmán, personal secretary to Brugada, and her advisor José Muñoz shocked the Mexico City government and the entire country.

The attack occurred shortly after 7 a.m. in the Moderna neighborhood, just a few kilometers from the National Palace, while both officials were in their vehicle without security escorts. Although political violence is frequent in other regions of the country, it is unusual in the capital, generating widespread outrage and calls for caution in handling information.

Around the 43rd minute of her morning press conference, President Sheinbaum was informed in real time about the double homicide. In response to Marco Rubio’s statements, who claimed that political violence in Mexico is “real” and offered U.S. assistance, Sheinbaum was clear: “To everyone, including Marco Rubio, I ask not to jump to conclusions.

Investigations must be conducted to determine the cause and motive of this tragic and lamentable homicide. No speculation can be made until all investigations are complete.” The president stressed that neither Guzmán nor Muñoz had received prior threats and that no additional security measures for her cabinet are currently planned.

Sheinbaum and Head of Government Clara Brugada reiterated their administrations’ commitment to justice and fighting impunity. “We will not allow violence to weaken our institutions,” the president declared, assuring that the full weight of the state will fall on those responsible for the crime.

The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office and the Secretariat of Citizen Security are already searching for the alleged perpetrators, while videos circulated show how the officials were ambushed and shot by a suspect who later fled.

The lack of professionalism in Marco Rubio’s comments is evident as he makes allegations about supposed political motives behind the officials’ murder without any evidence or progress in the investigation to support such claims.

By categorically stating that “political violence there is real” and suggesting U.S. intervention, Rubio disregards due process and institutional responsibility, fueling media speculation at a time when Mexican authorities, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, have precisely called to avoid conjecture until verified information about the facts is available.

The president and the capital’s head of government have expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and guaranteed they will receive all necessary support. They also reaffirmed the continuation of the security strategy, which has achieved significant progress in reducing impunity and combating organized crime in the capital.

“We will get to the bottom of this situation and ensure justice is served,” Sheinbaum declared, making it clear that the government of the Fourth Transformation will not allow violence or foreign interference to halt the country’s democratic and social progress.

Finally, the president recalled that Mexico’s history is marked by the defense of sovereignty against attempts at foreign intervention, and that her government will not allow external voices to dictate the national agenda. “What we cannot do is speculate,” Sheinbaum insisted, calling for unity, responsibility, and respect for the judicial process as the only legitimate path to clarify this tragic event and strengthen Mexico’s popular democracy.
